Jaws T-Shirt Shop on South Padre Island

My impression is that South Padre Island must have more t-shirt and similar shops per capita than any other town in Texas. Maybe the world. Some of them are quite large and impressive.

The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is the easternmost of nine sites that constitute the World Birding Center. The other sites are inland, along the Rio Grande River.

Mangroves next to the boadwalk at the South Padre Island Birding Center

The boardwalk at the Birding Center allows a close view of red mangrove trees growing in the mud of Laguna Madre. Mangroves play a key role in providing habitat for many species, and especially as shelter for young fish.

Sand dunes on South Padre Island

A few miles north of the intensely built-up area the beach and dunes of South Padre Island are peaceful and natural. L:aguna Madre lies behind the beach, a brackish lagoon with a totally different ecology than the open coast.
