The Southernmost Redwoods
On the Big Sur coast, Los Padres National Forest, California

The coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, occurs naturally only in a narrow coastal strip 470 miles long, from the Chetco River in southern Oregon to Big Sur. It grows here at its southernmost locations only in narrow gulches that drop precipitously to the ocean, subject to fierce forest fires and debris-laden floods.

The trees here are not large (for redwoods) and the groves are narrow and steep. But there is something very special about these trees of the temperate rain forest, the tallest in the world, surviving here alongside sage and yucca. Los Padres National Forest has designated this the Southern Redwood Botanical Area.
