One of the Sierra's largest rivers, and the first to be exploited for irrigation, the Stanisluas has also been noted for whitewater river running in kayaks ans rafts. Construction of the New Melones Dam drowned one of the best stretches of whitewater and was fought, unsuccessfully, by the Friends of the River.
