The Sundial Bridge
Over the Sacramento River in Redding, California

The Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay is a pedestrian bridge spanning the Sacramento River in the city of Redding. It forms part of the 35 mile Sacramento Rver Trail leading north to Shasta Dam.

The bridge was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It has a single 217 foot tower tilted due north, with a glass deck 700 feet long. A landscaped area at the east end is marked with hours where the tower's shadow falls, making it the world's largest sundial. The shadow progresses around the dial at about one foot per minute, but is only accurate one day a year - the Summer Solstice on June 21/22.
