Sutter Creek
Amador County, California

Sutter Creek, named for John Sutter, has a history typical of towns along Highway 49 - early placer mining followed by hard rock mining. It is also in the Amador County grape growing and winery area. Its main street has a continuous row of historic buildings, many now housing tasting rooms, and bed and breakfasts.

The Knight Foundry, a block off the main street in Sutter Creek, was an important industrial center in the nineteenth century, specializing in water turbines, forestry, mining, dredging, and custom-made equipment. The machine shop ran entirely on water power, a 42-inch Knight wheel (predecessor of the Pelton wheel) and a complex arrangement of overhead shafts and canvas belts. Efforts to re-open the foundray as a museum are ongoing.
