The Tall Trees Grove on Redwood Creek
Redwood National Park, California

In 1963 an expedition sponsored by the National Geographic Society discovered the tallest tree in the world here on Redwood Creek. This led to decades of struggle to preserve as much of the Redwood Creek watershed as possible within Redwood National Park.

Congress failed to act wisely and eventually most of the old growth forest was logged - then the cutover land was sold to the government at outrageous prices. I can remember camping here in the 1970's, listening to big trees crashing down several times per hour, as logging proceeded within a mile of the grove.

The Tall Trees Grove contains a number of trees close in height to the world record. It can be reached only by hiking down from an old logging road in the Bald Hills, or a longer hike following up Redwood Creek.
