St Charles Avenue streetcar stop at Tulane/Loyola

When I lived in New Orleans many years ago I rode the St Charles streetcar to work. These historic cars were built in the 1920's and, as historic landmarks, cannot be modified. That means no air conditioning, so when it is hot all the windows are wide open.

Gibson Hall at Tulane University

Gibson Hall at Tulane University

Impressive Gibson Hall, flanked by two other buildings in the same style, makes a powerful first impression when the Tulane campus is entered from St Charles Avenue. This is where I worked for two years, as Assistant Dean of the University College.

Tulane University campus

The riverwards part of the Tulane campus consists of well-spaced brick and stone buildings amongst lawns and old trees. This half of the campus is on relatively high ground (for New Orleans) and did not flood during Hurricane Katrina.

Newcomb College on the uptown Tulane campus

Newcomb, traditionally the women's college within Tulane University, was based in the building seen at the far end of Newcomb Quad. After Hurricane Katrina the undergraduate programs were combined as Newcomb-Tulane College.

New stadium at Tulane

New stadium at Tulane

I thought it was a step in the right direction when Tulane demolished its on-campus stadium in 1979, so I was amazed to find that they built a new one, Yulman Stadium, in 2014.

Loyola University New Orleans

Loyola University New Orleans

Loyola sits side by side with Tulane, on the same pie-wedge shaped Foucher Plantation site. Its red brick buildings differentiate it strongly from Tulanes's gray stone. It is a Catholic university associated with the Jesuit order.
