Twin Falls Gorge
On the Mackenzie Highway north of tghe border with Alberta, The Northwest Territories

An excellent visitor information centre greets trravellers entering NWT on the Mackenzie Highway. It is located right on the 60th parallel, only six and half degrees short of the Arctic Circle.

The Hay River falls sheer over two waterfalls just north of the border. The uppermost, Alexandra Falls, drops over a cliff that runs straight across the canyon. Just downstream Louise Falls splits in three as it cascades over a zig-zap brink. The color of the water in the Hay River is striking, a clear orange-brown, due to tannin in the water draining from muskeg bogs and taiga forest.
