Twin Sisters at Wallula Gap on the Columbia RiverThese distinctive basalt towers overlooking the Wallula Gap on the Columbia River have been landmarks since prehistoric times. Native Americans built legends to explain them. Geologists note that they were probably scoured out of the ridge top by the Missoula Floods near the end of the ice age.

McNary Dam on the Columbia RiverThe Corps of Engineers built McNary Dam in 1947-1954 to generate electric power. It includes an elaborate salmon migration facility, and a navigation lock.
