Selfies and hearts in Union Square

Selfies and hearts in Union Square

My intention here was to show the ugly Nieman Marcus department store and construction on the subway tunnel to Chinatown. But this couple paused for a romantic self-portrait by one of the hearts that is scattered around the square.

Union Square in late afternoon

Union Square in late afternoon

Center of the shopping district and in many ways the heart of the city, Union Square dates from the city's earliest days. It's name commemorates rallies in support of the Union side in the Civil War, and the column celebrates the victory at Manilla Bay in the Spanish American War.

Parking garage entrance under Union Square

The parking garage beneath Union Square was built in 1939-41 and was the world's first such underground garage. The initiative came from local merchants, and demolition of the existing square required a decision of the California supreme court.

The old City of Paris rotunda at Neiman Marcus

The City of Paris, dating from 1850, was a major department store on the corner of Union Square, noted for the enormous (real) Christmas tree installed in its rotunda every year. When Neiman Marcus demolished and rebuilt they were required to preserve the dome, and the Christmas tree tradition continues.

Specialty shops abound in the Union Square shopping district. San Francisco's own Gumps luxury housewares and Asian art store was located here for many years.
