Lighthouses in California - Southern

South from Point Conception

Point Conception Light

Point Conception divides the northern and southern California coasts - its direction abruptly veers from north-south to east-west, and both surf patterns and climate change.

It was discovered by Cabrillo in 1542 and named by Vizcaino in 1602. The original lighthouse was built here in 1856, one of the earliest on the Pacific Coast. It is still in operation, using the original first-order Fresnel lens.

Despite its significance this lighthouse is almost impossible to get to, the Holy Grail for lighthouse hunters. On the north it is blocked by Vandenburg Air Force Base, to the southeast by the very private Hollister Ranch. The best one can do is to get a glimpse of it from the Amtrak trains that pass a mile inland twice a day.

Anacapa Island Lighthouse

East Anacapa is the easiest of the Channel Islands to get to, daily ferries from Ventura. The entire island, and its twin West anacapa, are part of the Channel Islands National Park

Anacapa is small and ringed by cliffs, so there is not much to do except walk the loop trail , admire the views, and watch the birds. The lighthouse is at the east tip of the island but cannot be approached because of the eardrum-shattering blasts of the foghorn. There is a small barren campground, sometimes with nesting seabirds birds between the sites. It might be very peaceful at night - except for that foghorn.

Angels Gate Light

Because this lighthouse stands at the tip of the breakwater sheltering the Port of Los Angeles, anyone taking a cruise from San Pedro or a ferry to Catalina will get a good nearby view of it. Nonethless, I was unable to take a panorama as I passed by on the catamaran to Catalina because of the speed of the vessel and the choppiness of the water. Maybe next time.

Old Point Loma Lighthouse

This lighthouse gets heavy visitation, being one of the main sights of San Diego and adjacent to the Cabrillo Memorial. But as a lighthouse it was a failure. Located 400 feet high on the bluff top it was frequently cloaked in fog and could not be seen by ships when they needed it most.

The "new" Point Loma light replaced it functionally in 1891, but the historic structure has survived, largely because it has been under the jurisdiction of the national park service since 1933. In its triny museum can be found the third-order Fresnel lens from the defunct Mile Rocks Lighthouse in San Francisco Bay.

Point Loma Light (New Point Loma Lighthouse)

Located near sea level at the base of Point Loma, this light replaced the one on the bluff 400 feet above. It is the only example of its design on the west coast, a central steel column with bracing legs. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public and a close view is only possible from the coean side.
