Yellowstone National Park - North

thumbnail - The Roosevelt Arch at Yellowstone's north entrance

This stone arch was built in 1903, the cornerstone laid by President Theodore Roosevelt. In the early days this was the main park entry because a railroad came up the river to Gardiner. The inscription reads "For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People".

thumbnail - My own personal buffalo herd

My favorite shot of the trip was a pleasant surprise. In an effort to get away from the crowds and get a 360 without an obvious road in it, I parked where there was only room for one vehicle, then hiked a short distance away over a hilltop. When I looked down the other side I saw a small herd of bison (buffalo). For just long enough to take this panorama I was the only one there to see them - it was my own personal buffalo herd.

thumbnail - Hourly eruption of Old Faithful Geyser

Some geysers erupt unpredictably several times a day, others only at intervals of weeks or months. But Old Faithful goes off so regularly that its eruption times are posted by the park service - you can even check them on-line! Eruptions are a little over an hour apart, and as the predicted time approaches more and more people arrive to watch. The benches go halfway around and are usually full, with more people standing behind, a thousand or more.

thumbnail - Fishing Bridge crosses the Yellowstone River where it exits Yellowstone Lake

The Fishing Bridge stretch of the Yellowstone River is where Yellowstone Lake's cuththroat trout spawn, and at certain times of year one can see thousands of them from the bridge. Fishing has always been allowed in national parks (but not hunting) and for many years there would be a line of anglers standing shoulder to shoulder on this bridge, hauling them out. This had a predictable impact on the fish population and has been prohibited since 1973.
