Originally the Call Building, this was one of the city's early steel-frame skyscrapers, 300 feet tall. It survived the 1906 earthquake, but was gutted by the subsequent fire. The ornate dome (similar to the Humboldt Bank Building) and other decoration were removed when it was renovated.

The Caltrain Peninsula commuter service (formerly the Southern Pacific) never reached downtown San Francisco. There is now an efficient transfer point with the Muni Metro light rail. In a few years the 4th Street line will feed into the underground Central Subway, leading directly to Union Square and Chinatown. Maybe someday Caltrain and High Speed Rail will continue underground from here to the new terminal on Mission Street.

thumbnail - St Charles Avenue streetcar stop at Tulane/Loyola

When I lived in New Orleans many years ago I rode the St Charles streetcar to work. These historic cars were built in the 1920's and, as historic landmarks, cannot be modified. That means no air conditioning, so when it is hot all the windows are wide open.

thumbnail - St Charles Avenue streetcar

Historic streetcars rumble up and down St Charles Avenue day and night, as they have for more than 150 years. The cars themselves, green with red trim, all date from the 1920's. They are two-ended, and at the Carollton terminus the driver flips all the mahogany and brass seats over and moves to the other end of the car.

thumbnail - Red streetcars on Canal Street

Old photos show four sets of tracks down the middle of broad Canal Street, but the service was closed in 1964 and the rolling stock sold. Fortunately, the value of streetcars is once again appreciated, and the Canal Street line has been revived and new cars built for it.

thumbnail - The Moon Walk on the Mississippi River

For most of the 20th century New Orleans was walled off from the river by railroad tracks and warehouses. In 1976 Mayor "Moon" Landrieu managed to clear a strip in front of Jackson Square so the city could finally look out upon its river. The pedestrian way has now been extended in both directions.
