Waterfalls in Alaska, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories

Nugget Falls

Estimated height: 375 feet / 114 meters

Probably the most visited waterfall in Alaska, it is a short hike from the visitor center at the Mendenhall Glacier in the suburbs of Juneau.

Million Dollar Falls

A dramatic cataract in a rocky gorge, this waterfall is adjacent to a territorial campground of the same name.

Rancheria Falls

There is a very nice nature trail through boreal forest to this small waterfall. The water is the color of weak tea, token of its origins in peat bogs in the broad valley of the Rancheria River upstream. I always stop here and usually take the trail to the falls, it is well-placed for a rest stop along one of the less interesting stretches of the Alsaka Highway.

Virginia Falls

Total height: 294 feet / 90 meters

One of the great waterfalls of the world, huge and dramatic, an Arctic rival to Niagara. But to get there requires an expensive air tour or charter, so I haven't made it yet.

Alexandra Falls

Alexandra Falls, along with Louise Falls, is in Twin Falls Gorge on the Waterfall Highway in the Northwest Territory.

Louise Falls

Also in Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park. Both Alexandra and Louise Falls are noted for the bright orange color of their peat-infused water.

Lady Evelyn Falls

One of the highlights of the Waterfalls Route, NWT Highway 1. Someday I will find the time to drive to this part of the NWT - it's not challenging, just a very long way from anywhere.
